Title: Scientific Parallel Computing on NWICG/OSG

Abstract:

Parallel computing through the grid middleware on the OSG stack is one
of ongoing challenges in NWICG. In this presentation, I will introduce
experiences for the parallel computing on NWICG (between Notre Dame and
Purdue). In particular, issues on integration between MPICH and SGE on
the OSG stack will be discussed. Moreover, NERSC is a site which
supports SGE and parallel computing environments to OSG users. Through
this presentation, I hope that NERSC and NWICG could exchange
information and experience and could be discussed on developing and
providing optimal environments for parallel computing on OSG. The second
author currently performs numerical weather simulations using the
Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) model v2.2 from the National Center
for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and will soon upgrade to the newly
released v3.0 of the model. This research is in collaboration with the
T.N. Krishnamurti group at Florida State University performing mesoscale
simulations of tropical cyclones. A new line of research is also
emerging with Purdue University in the area of resolving convective
scale weather systems under future climate change scenarios. Each of
these endeavors involves collaboration with external institutions. At
NWICG_NotreDame we seek to develop grid middleware to facilitate the use
of computer resources by all team members and then to share this
middleware through organizations such as the Engage VO at the
Renaissance Computing Institute (RENCI) in North Carolina.
