We meet WEDNESDAYS 11:10 - noon in Room 380 Soda Hall, Berkeley campus.

M. Gu (mgu at math.berkeley.edu), and B. N. Parlett (parlett at math.berkeley.edu). 
The program will be a mixture of research talks and tutorials.
The tutorials will provide a partial sequel to Math 221.

Title: A Numerical Algorithm for the Construction of Gaussian-Like Quadratures in Two and Higher Dimensions  

Abstract: In this talk, we present a new numerical algorithm for the
construction of quadratures with high efficiencies for integration in
higher dimensional regions.  The resulting rules possess properties
such as positivity of weights, interiority of nodes, and symmetries,
similar to those of Gaussian quadratures in one dimension.  We
illustrate the effectiveness of our method with numerical examples;
many of the formulae we discovered appear to be new.
