SPECIAL ROOM: Bldg 380 Rm 380X (Math Corner of Quad, basement)

   Eigenvalue inequalities, scaling and log-convexity:
            old results and new applications,
            a tribute to Sam Karlin

   Professor Shmuel Friedland
Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science
   University of Illinois at Chicago

In a joint work with Sam Karlin in 1975 we established a remarkable
lower bound for the spectral radius of certain families of nonnegative
matrices. This result and its ramifications became useful in various
applied fields such as mathematical biology, operations research, and
electrical engineering.

In the first part of this talk we outline the main theoretical
results: extremal properties of the Perron-Frobenius theory of
nonnegative matrices, Friedland-Karlin inequality, scaling of
nonnegative matrices, and the log-convexity result of J.F.C. Kingman.

In the second part of the talk we discuss applications of the above
results to the problem of maximizing sum rates in Gaussian
interference-limited channels in cellular communication.
