Speaker: Gunilla Kreiss, Professor, Uppsala University, Sweden

Title: Uppsala's ICME

A traditional area of expertise of the Scientific Computing Division
at Uppsala University is analysis and development of stable high order
finite difference methods for initial boundary value problems for
partial differential equations. The last 15 years of development in
parallel computing algorithms has put Uppsala in the forefront of
research and in the area of high performance computing. Our knowledge
complements ICME expertise nicely. There are already many
examples of research and teaching collaboration between the Uppsala
group and ICME people at Stanford, where complimentary areas of
expertise have been successfully linked (Gustafsson-Moin
collaboration, CME212 etc).

A new effort is the joint Kreiss-Gerritsen project on moving contact line
modeling for simulating oil/water flow. We will also briefly describe our
research efforts in two other
areas; computational quantum chemistry; and design optimization, where
we believe fruitful collaborations can be established.

The leaders of these projects, Sverker Holmgren and Martin Berggren,
will be available at the colloquium for further discussions.
