On Passwords
At Sandia, you will have several different passwords to manage. Here are some
guidelines to help you understand what passwords you will have, how to choose
them, and how to protect them.
Your Kerberos (SRN) Password
-
Upon sign-in, you will receive a slip of paper with your Kerberos password.
-
You can change your Kerberos password at any time by
clicking here.
-
The Kerberos password is used for:
-
Getting your email,
-
Accessing Sandia internal web pages (some of which are listed above),
-
Your password on most SRN (Sandia Restricted Network) machines.
-
This password should only be used on SRN machines. Do not use it on the
SON or on any non-Sandia machines.
Your SON Password
-
All passwords must be machine generated by the
Sandia-approved password generation utility. (This web site requires a
Kerberos password for access. I recommend that anyone without a Kerberos
password work with his or her mentor to access the site.)
-
This password should only be used on SON machines. Do not use it on the
SRN or on any non-Sandia machines.
Protecting Passwords and Passphrases (from COM100 Training Guide, 2004)
"All unclassified passwords are considered to
be Official Use Only (OUO), a category of Unclassified Controlled
Information (UCI)."
"You may carry it in your wallet or purse, or
you may store it in a locked cabinet or desk. Don't share your passwords
with anyone, and don't store passwords on any electrical device."
If Your Password is Compromised
-
Let your mentor or department manager know immediately!
